Trans Fatty Acids

We have heard so many times about the bad health effects of trans fats. What are they? Where do they come from? How does it affect us?  In order to answer these questions and to create awareness on these types of fats, Assoc Prof D. Goburdhun, of the Faculty of Agriculture wrote an article in le Mauricien in 2010.

Lipids contribute to good health. Fats or lipids are an important part of a healthy diet because they supply essential fatty acids and energy (calories). They help the body absorb vitamins A, D and E. They also play a fundamental role in the composition of cell membranes, nuclei and nerve tissue. Fats and oils are composed mainly of fatty acids. A fatty acid is a molecule composed of a chain of carbons linked to hydrogens. Most fats and oils are made of a mixture of different types of fatty acids, but in general, a special type of fatty acid predominates. To read more click here

Knowledge Hub by Prof J.Manrakhan

Dear All

Prof J. Manrakhan was one of the VCs of the UoM. He is still a prolific writer and has a style and genre of writing that is difficult to emulate. In this article he gave us an histrorical insight on the evolution of the knowledge hub in Mauritius, including the making of the Agriculture School today known as the Faculty of Agriculture and in the end he  made some serious reflections that all of us should ponder on. New Agriculturist 2011

The latest edition of New Agriculturist (2011-1) is now online at www.new-ag.info. With extreme flooding already causing havoc in 2011, most climate experts agree that global warming will exacerbate such events. In this edition, we present viewpoints from the Cancun climate summit and the effect of two degrees warming on agriculture. We also focus on the impact of knowledge sharing and, with your input, we hope to learn the impact of sharing New Agriculturist with you.
