HAAGRIM SCHOLARS

I am pleased to inform you that as part of the HAAGRIM project, the Faculty will once more host scholars (from different universities in Africa), during the period 16 November - 22 December 2017. This will be a privileged time for staff and students of the Faculty to interact with the scholars, and benefit from an exchange of experiences. As you are aware, within the context of the UoM Strategic Plan, 'Internationalisation of its activities' is one strategic objective of our university. 

Through the HAAGRIM project, the Faculty has integrated an international/intercultural dimension into our teaching, research and service functions. You will recall the recent visits of Sophie Diallo (Universite Gaston Berger; Senegal), and Philippe Jacques Gbedjegloaho (Universite de Abomey-Calavi; Benin), and their valued inputs to our Faculty, and the running of the International MSc programme: MSc Agribusiness Management (with 7 students from different African countries).

Dr Brinda Ramasawmy (Local Coordinator for HAAGRIM) has already prepared a plan of work for each scholar. Please find in attachment the names of scholars, and the purpose of their stay at the Faculty. 

I take this opportunity to extend our thanks to Brinda, Kamlesh and the administrative staff for all the work and effort in preparing the visit of the scholars.

GRADUATION CEREMONY MSc Agribusiness

The graduation ceremony for the MSc Agribusiness Management students (7 out of 8 being HAAGRIM scholars) was held on Tuesday 29th November 2016. This graduation ceremony is the culmination point of a programme of studies which started in August 2015.  It was attended by (1) The Chancellor, Dr J.C Autrey, (2) The Vice-Chancellor, Prof- R.Mohee, (3) The Pro-VC (Academia) and (4) The Registrar, Mrs Issur-Goorah, and her staff. HAAGRIM is a flagship project for the Faculty and University. This project has helped us to acquire skills and experience in running successfully such type of EU-funded projects.

We are indeed proud at the Faculty of Agriculture for having been able to accompany the foreign HAAGRIM students for almost 18 months until the successful completion of their postgraduate degree. These African students are now alumni of the UoM and will be our UoM brand ambassadors on the African continent.  This is a good example of the internationalisation of our academic activities.

They all have had a very rich professional exposure during their 6 month work placement and some of them have even contributed to improvements and innovations in their placement organisations through their dissertation work (e.g allowing one agrifood enterprise to obtain the Maurigap and Made in Moris certifications through the setting up of a traceability system from farm to supermarket; providing a mathematical tool to the Chemistry division of the MSIRI for faster and cost-effective calculation of fertiliser recommendations to producers etc.

Bravo a toute L'equipe, avec une mention speciale a Dr B.Ramsawmy qui est la cheville ouvriere de cette programme de HAAGRIM.

MSC AGRIBUSINESS MANAGEMENT GRADUATION CEREMONY 2016

The Faculty of Agriculture will be organising a special graduation ceremony on Tuesday 29 November 2016 at 16.30 hours in the R Burrenchobay Lecture Theatre for the MSc Agribusiness Management students. This programme saw the participation of 7 HAAGRIM scholars and one Mauritian. This is a special event for the Faculty of Agriculture which has successfully run the course and implemented the project. A special thanks goes to Dr Brinda Ransawmy for spearheading the project to fruition.

Le Programme de mobilité universitaire INTRA-ACP dénommé HAAGRIM vise notamment à impulser une « Harmonisation et Amélioration des programmes de master et de doctorat en AGRIbusiness par la Mobilité entre l'Afrique de l'Ouest, de L'Est et du Centre pour un développement socio-économique durable ». Les groupes cibles visés sont : les étudiants, le personnel technique ou administratif et le personnel académique des Universités concernées.

C’est dans ce cadre que nous avons eu le plaisir d'acceullir Mons. Philippe Gdedjeglo du 15 août au 18 septembre 2016, de la Faculté des Sciences Agronomiques de l’Université d’Abomey-Calavi (FSA-UAC) du Bénin. Il a mis en place  un échantillon d’interface de vulgarisation des travaux de recherche des étudiants de la Faculté. Il s’agit, en réalité, d’une Bibliothèque virtuelle réalisée avec le logiciel libre (open source) Greenstone.

La Mobilité de HAAGRIM - An Intra-ACP mobility programme

 

Dans le cadre du projet HAAGRIM, nous avons l'immense plaisir d'accueillir à la Faculté D'Agriculture, de l'Université de Maurice (Ile Maurice), Mons. Philippe Gbedjeglo de l'Université d'Abomey-Calavi, Bénin et (Mlle) Mme Sophie Diallo, Chargée de Mission du Recteur de l'Université Gaston Berger, Sénégal.

Durant leur séjour, nous aurons l'opportunité d'échanger des ideés sur differents thèmes dans le domaine agricole. Nous puiserons de l'expertise de M. Philippe en tant que documentaliste et administrateur gestionnaire des services publics tandis que Mme Sophie nous aidera sur les thématiques suivantes : "fund raising strategies" et "rebranding of the Faculty".

Visit of President of Ghana- Participation of Mr Solomon AKAMITI

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Mr John Dramani Mahama, accompanied by a strong delegation visited Mauritius for a four-day State visit from 24 to 27 August 2015. A banquet hosted for the President by the Prime Minister at Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre, Pailles saw the participation of a few Ghanian students. Mr Solomon AKAMITI, a student the Master degree in AgriBusiness at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Mauritius, under the HAAGRIM project was invited. HAAGRIM - First Mobility Cohort Debriefing Session

At the end of their 6 months placement at the Faculty, Mr Amos Chacha (Kenya) and Ms Junie Brodelle (Cameroon) presented the outcomes of their HAAGRIM mobility at the University of Mauritius. The meeting was attended by academic staff and was followed by a get together with the administrative staff to bid farewell to them.  In their presentation both students highlighted their appreciation of the modules they have followed in Agribusiness and their 2 months work placement. They expounded on skills gained in project management and writing business plans. And lastly but not least they have enjoyed their interaction with local students.

Call for HAAGRIM scholarship - An Opportunity not to be missed!!!!!!!

Students currently following a Masters course at FoA and currently registered MPhil/PhD students can also benefit from this opportunity if relevant to their field of study.

Kindly note that students currently registered for a Masters course at UoM or an MPhil/PhD in a field related to management, marketing, entrepreneurship, business management are also encouraged to apply.

Periods abroad for Masters students: 6 months (follow modules in a Masters course in the partner university) and can include an industry placement upon request.

Students can also opt follow a Masters programme in a partner university for 12 months and mobility should start at most in September 2015 or before.

Periods abroad for PhD students: up to 18 months but mobility should start at most in April 2015 or before.

LAUNCHING of the HAAGRIM PROJECT - INTRA ACP MOBILITY - SENEGAL

Mobilité universitaire Intra-ACP : Une vingtaine de dossiers ont été sélectionnés pour constituer la première cohorte du projet HAAGRIM  l’agrobusiness africain.

 Le programme Harmonisation et Amélioration des Programmes de Master et de Doctorat en Agrobusiness par la Mobilité entre l’Afrique de l’Ouest, de l’Est et du Centre pour un Développement socio-économique durable ( Haagrim) est né pour servir de plateforme de formation et de recherche en agrobusiness et de catalyseur pour la croissance durable et inclusive de l’Afrique », a déclaré, ce matin, le recteur de l’Université Gaston Berger de Saint-Louis, le professeur Lamine Guèye qui présidait la cérémonie de lancement de ce projet.

The Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Mauritius is a partner in this Intra-ACP mobility programme. Mr Kamleshwar Boodhoo of the Faculty of Agriculture attended the launching ceremony. Dr Brinda Ramasawmy, who is the local coordinator of the project, has put in place the project locally. Mauritian students and staff registered at the UoM stands to gain from this mobility programme and give them a different perspective of agribusines in the partner countries of the project. Students of the Unité de Formation et de Recherche (U.F.R.) Sciences Agronomiques, Aquaculture et Technologie Alimentaire, (UFR S2ATA) Université Gaston Berger de Saint-Louis 

 Mobilité universitaire Intra-ACP : le projet Haagrim veut booster l’agrobusiness africain. « HAAGRIM peut jouer un rôle clé dans le renforcement des compétences en  grobusiness au niveau des institutions partenaires, mais aussi peut jouer un rôle moteur dans la stratégie de développement agricole en Afrique », a-t-il ajouté en exprimant l’honneur fait à l’UGB « d’assurer la coordination de ce programme collaboratif qui assure une mobilité des étudiants et du personnel académique et technique en agrobusiness ».

Le recteur GUEYE a signalé par ailleurs que « la priorité accordée à l’agriculture, nécessite, de la part de tout un chacun, un engagement et des ruptures en matière de pratiques et de comportements », en indiquant que la création à l’UGB de l’UFR S2ATA répond à cette préoccupation.

En effet, l’UFR dispense une formation de pointe en Agronomie, en Nutrition, en agroalimentaire. À l’issue de leur formation, les diplômés seront qualifiés pour appliquer les connaissances acquises, les outils modernes de la technologie d’ingénierie agricole et pour résoudre les problèmes complexes de l’agrobusiness. Financé par l’Union européenne dans le cadre du Programme de mobilité universitaire intra-ACP (Afrique, Caraïbes et Pacifique) et pour un montant de 1.927.925,00 €. Une vingtaine de dossiers ont été sélectionnés pour constituer la première cohorte du projet «Harmonisation et amélioration des programmes de master et de doctorat en agro-business par la mobilité entre l’Afrique de l’Ouest, de l’Est et du Centre pour un développement socio-économique durable (HAAGRIM), a affirmé, vendredi à Saint-Louis, son coordonnateur Seydou Nourou Sall.

Le docteur Saidou SALL, coordonnateur de l’Haagrim a expliqué que ce programme va concourir à renforcer la coopération entre les différents établissements membres. Il va faciliter l’accès à une éducation de qualité, a dit le docteur SALL, en permettant aux étudiants d’entreprendre des études et troisièmes cycle. « Le programme Haagrim va assurer plus de mobilité personnel administratif et renforcer la compétitivité des universités membres, une disposition bien exprimée dans les recommanda issus de la concertation nationale sur l'enseignement supérieur », note M. SALL.

L’Union européenne qui soutient ce programme souhaite le renforcement de la mobilité universitaire et espère que le nombre d’étudiants qui bénéficie de ce projet soit revu à la hausse, d’après Elena Palavbova, la représentante de l’organisation.

À la suite de la cérémonie officielle, marquée par une présence des toutes les parties prenantes, le Docteur Ndiobo DIENE, Coordonnateur du Programme de Développement inclusif de l'Agrobusiness au Sénégal a présenté une communication sur le thème : « Agrobusiness et développement en Afrique ».

Rappelons que le projet Haagrim a été mis en place, à l’issue du Séminaire du Réseau Africain pour l’Agriculture, l’Agroforesterie et de la Gestion des Ressources naturelles (ANAFE),tenu à l’UGB en avril 2012. Les universités partenaires de l’UGB dans ce projet sont : Université polytechnique de Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso), Université de Thiès (Sénégal), Université des sciences et techniques de Masuku (Gabon), Université Abomey-Calavi (Bénin), Kenyaatta University (Kenya), Université of Mauritius (Ile Maurice) Université Félixe Houphouët Boigny (Côte-d’Ivoire).
