Vice Chancellor's African Studies Seminar Series

The University of Mauritius launched the Vice Chancellor's African Studies Seminar Series and the SSR Chair of African Studies on the 27th of May and the University is glad to report that the whole event/ceremony/public lecture went very well. This double launch came a few months after the appointment of Professor Sheila Bunwaree as the first SSR Chair of African ​Studies at U​o​M.

The setting up of this Chair is a strategic decision of the University of Mauritius, with the view of using the African Studies platform to develop and consolidate our relationship with the African continent, contribute to the government's Mauritius- Africa strategy through debates and research as well as project the University of Mauritius more effectively as a knowledge hub and a ​C​entre of Excellence in the region. As a follow up to a very successful launch, the University is about to start with the actual Vice Chancellor's African Studies Seminar Series (which is open to the public) The first talk took place on the 17 June 2016.

We are inviting each and every one of you to attend and participate in this Seminar Series- a first at the university of Mauritius! Your role will be instrumental in promoting a culture of 'interdisciplinary' debate so vital for contemporary development and speaks directly to the University's strategic vision.

You may also be glad to know that the University is planning to introduce a foundational/compulsory module in 'African studies',​ across ​F​aculties and we are expecting that some of you will be involved in a more direct manner. Another major event that the SSR chair of African studies is planning to host at the University is a major international conference sometime next year from which we hope to get some of the best papers published.

We count on your presence and your participation at the forthcoming seminars.

"Innovation and Technology Transfer: Advancing Sustainable Agri-food Production" 

 
The 9th Edition of the UoM Research Week will be organised by the University of Mauritius from 12 to 16 September 2016.

The Research Week aims at providing a consolidated platform for staff, students and researchers to interact and carry out peer discussions on ongoing or emerging research. The main objective of the Research Week is therefore to showcase research being undertaken in the country.

Academic Staff members, students and participants are invited to submit extended abstracts for oral presentations and poster sessions. Stakeholders from private and public sectors including alumni are welcome to participate.

Up to two (2) oral presentations will be allowed per presenter. Oral presentations will be of a duration of 20 minutes (including question time). Poster presentations should be in A1 format.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Extended abstracts should be submitted online at latest by 18 July 2016 and should include the following details:

• ​The Presentation title (up to 20 words);
• The name, affiliation and email of all authors;​
• Paper type (oral or poster);
• A word description (between 500 and 700 words) of the presentation (extended abstract).

The extended abstract should comprise the background and objectives of the study, approach and methodology, major findings of the research work, conclusion and significance, and up to five (5) keywords.

All extended abstracts will be blind reviewed and the corresponding author will be notified of acceptance at latest by 12 August 2016. Accepted abstracts will be published in the UoM Research Week e-Book of Abstracts.

Launching of the Knowledge Transfer Office at the University of Mauritius

With the aim of providing support structures to facilitate Knowledge Transfer, Research Uptake and Intellectual Property Rights and forging strong links and contacts between research groups, the industry and stakeholders, the University of Mauritius officially launched a Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO), during a ceremony held on Thursday 28 April 2016, in the RBLT, University of Mauritius. Honourable (Mrs) Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, Minister of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research  and Dr John Kirkland OBE, Deputy Secretary General of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and other dignitaries was present at this launching ceremony.

In line with the Strategic Plan 2015-2020, the Knowledge Transfer Office further endevours to raise the visibility and relevance of the knowledge created by university staff and students of the UoM thereby increasing the quantity and improving the quality of collaborative research activity together with meeting the needs of the society at large.

Professor Romeela Mohee, CSK, Vice-Chancellor of the University initiated this project as a means to attract talented and enthusiastic researchers to deliver world-class research, cutting-edge technologies, and paradigm-shifting ideas. She further stresses that the office will support researchers and their collaborators with a wide range of services, and facilitates the integration between knowledge creation and knowledge transfer.

50 years of the University of Mauritius_ Some famous places around Reduit campus

Bien plus qu’un endroit où l’on dispense des cours académiques, l'UoM a aidé à développer la région de Réduit.

L’université de Maurice (UoM) célèbre actuellement ses 50 années d’existence. Pour marquer le coup, elle a prévu toute une série d’activités, allant de dons de sang aux causeries. Si elle se retrouve souvent au centre de polémiques diverses et variées, l’UoM a indéniablement marqué de son empreinte l’île Maurice moderne. Bien plus qu’un endroit où l’on dispense des cours académiques, cet établissement a aidé à développer la région de Réduit. Cinq décennies après sa création, nous sommes allés à la rencontre de ceux qui l’ont connu à ses modestes débuts. Et en avons profité pour flâner sur le campus, histoire de se mêler aux «zeness» mais aussi aux anciens qui partagent son quotidien.

Bassin Soldat

En dépassant la State House, en direction de l’autoroute, se trouve un «ravin», du côté gauche. Des pentes vertigineuses sur lesquelles poussent des buissons permettent de rejoindre le Bassin Soldat, lieu que fréquentent assidûment des étudiants de l’UoM. Le «fencing», qui a été posé par mesure de sécurité, a été savamment tailladé. Selon des habitants du quartier, des jeunes qui n’ont pas froid aux yeux accèdent au Bassin Soldat à travers cette fente. Là, coupés du reste du monde, les étudiants passent du bon temps entre amis ou en amoureux.

Ton Gam et Prem Roti

Ce sont deux figures incontournables pour ceux qui fréquentent le campus universitaire. Soopaya Naicken, 84 ans, plus connu comme Ton Gam, a passé toute sa vie à Réduit. Il était parmi les premiers à ouvrir une boutique à cet endroit. En ce vendredi après-midi, Saneklall Luchun, 71 ans, surnommé Prem Roti, lui tient compagnie sous la véranda de la boutique. «Lontan ti ena bwa tousala. Ti ena lakaz lapay, lakaz tol», se remémore Ton Gam. Son ami, lui, soutient qu’il est l’un des premiers marchands de «roti» de l’île. C’est en 1968, après son mariage, qu’il est venu s’installer à Réduit. Les deux hommes ne mâchent pas leurs mots : «Ti ena enn bel diferans ant etidian lontan ek aster. Avan, zot ti plis konsantre dan letid.»

Ton Gam tient à préciser que «tou etidian inn pass dan mo lame. Ena inn vinn gran gran dimounn». Prem Roti souligne qu’il y a même d’anciens étudiants, qui sont partis à l’étranger, qui viennent lui rendre visite lors de leur passage au pays.

Bassin Canard

Situé aux abords de l’autoroute qui mène vers la capitale, à deux pas du campus universitaire, Bassin Canard est un «landmark», un lieu incontournable fréquenté par plusieurs générations d’étudiants. Les sacs à dos traînant dans l’herbe laissent à croire que la tradition perdurera pendant des années encore…

Cascade

Pour y accéder, il est préférable d’enfiler ses baskets et de ne pas avoir peur d’avaler quelques bornes. En effet, c’est en empruntant le sentier qui conduit à une ferme agricole que l’on accède au lieu-dit Cascade. Il s’agit en fait d’un pont, d’où l’on peut apercevoir une cascade et sa rivière en contrebas. De nombreux étudiants s’y rendent régulièrement, pour se prélasser dans l’herbe ou s’installer sur les gros rochers à proximité… L’endroit étant considéré comme étant dangereux, une barrière métallique y a été érigée.

Seeven Seenyen, propriétaire du D & D Snack

Au menu : sept cari, vindu… Seeven Seenyen est le propriétaire de D&D Snack, sis en face du campus. Cela fait dix ans qu’il tient ce snack, toujours bondé, où les mets authentiquement mauriciens attirent non seulement les étudiants mais aussi des gens qui travaillent dans les parages. «Il y a d’anciens étudiants de l’UoM qui viennent manger chez moi. J’ai toujours entretenu une bonne relation avec eux, j’en ai aidé beaucoup, surtout ceux qui n’avaient pas les moyens de se payer un repas», confie Seeven Seenyen. Toutefois, fait-il valoir, la «mentalité» et les moeurs ont beaucoup évolué. «Maintenant, les étudiants ont plus de moyens. Ils sont plus extrovertis, plus développés.»

Raja Veerapen, «Monsieur Binding»

Le jour de la soumission des dissertations, il y a foule chez Raja Veerapen. Pour cause, il tient une boutique située à côté de l’arrêt d’autobus et propose également de faire des photocopies et du «binding». Cela fait 23 ans qu’il est au service des élèves de l’UoM. «J’ai été parmi les premiers à proposer ce genre de service. Avant, il n’y avait pas autant de bâtiments. L’Engineering Tower n’existait pas.» Comme lui, de nombreux habitants de Réduit louent une partie de leur maison à des étrangers. «J’ai fait construire des étages additionnels que je loue à des étudiants qui viennent de l’extérieur, surtout des Rodriguais», dit celui qui a visiblement le sens des affaires.

Mamou

Toujours souriant, accueillant : Sonan Soubron, alias Mamou, est gérant de la boutique Coopératives. Cela fait 32 ans qu’il côtoie les étudiants de l’UoM, ayant repris le flambeau après son père. « Nous entretenons d’excellentes relations. Partout où je vais, les anciens étudiants me reconnaissent et m’aident. Dans le domaine médical ou financier, dans la fonction publique…»

50 years Celebrations of the University of Mauritius

A l’occasion de la célébration des 50 ans d’existence de l’Université de Maurice (UoM) ce matin à l’auditorium Octave Wiehe, le Premier ministre, sir Anerood Jugnauth, a estimé « très important » pour lui de « reconnaître la contribution majeure de l’UoM dans le développement économique et social » du pays. Il a par ailleurs estimé qu’il serait approprié que l’UoM soit la « flag university » de Maurice. De son côté, la ministre de l’Education, Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, a souligné l’importance de créer de nouvelles filières ayant trait aux demandes actuelles, telles la biotechnologie et le changement climatique.


Le Premier ministre a salué le rôle clé de l’UoM dans le secteur de l’Océanie. Alors que le gouvernement s’est engagé à développer un nouveau secteur, promis à devenir un pilier de notre pays, soit l’Océanie, SAJ s’est réjoui que l’UoM chapeaute le Capacity Building, Training and Employment Working Group, un des groupes de travail du National Ocean Council initié par le gouvernement. Il s’est par ailleurs réjoui de la nouvelle faculté d’études océaniques à l’UoM.

Il devait rappeler avoir été plusieurs fois présent à l’auditorium Octave Wiehe de l’UoM. D’ailleurs, lui-même y a été fait Doctor of Civil Law honoris causa. Il devait féliciter le premier établissement tertiaire de l’île pour ses « 50 années illustres et sa remarquable transformation ». Et de reconnaître sa contribution majeure dans le développement économique et social du pays durant les cinq dernières décennies. L’UoM, ajoute-t-il, « a soutenu les divers secteurs du pays à chaque phase de leur développement », notamment dans les domaines de l’agriculture, du textile, du tourisme, des services financiers et de l’informatique.
SAJ devait rappeler que l’idée de la création d’une université dans l’île émana d’abord d’Adrien d’Epinay, dans les années 1830, mais que ce projet devait être rejeté pendant longtemps, considéré alors comme « trop ambitieux et irréaliste ». C’est en 1914 qu’une première école d’agriculture vit le jour avant de se transformer en faculté en 1966. Deux ans plus tard, l’UoM se dotait de trois campus : l’agriculture, l’administration et les technologies industrielles. Aujourd’hui, l’institution compte six facultés.

The University of Mauritius Turns 50!!!!!!!

The University of Mauritius (UoM) will celebrate its golden jubilee on Thursday, December 10, 2015. Prime Minister Sir Anerood Jugnauth, shall open the official ceremony at the Paul Octave Wiehe Auditorium.
 
A series of activities is planned for this special day: the unveiling of a commemorative plaque; Book launch deceased Professor Mathur Hansraj entitled parliament and political institutions of Mauritius; the screening of a film and a photo exhibition on the development of the University of Mauritius since its infancy with the opening of the Faculty of Agriculture.

On this day, students and staff of the UoM planning a show, a lunch for former employees of the institution, a gala dinner with the Convocation (old university graduates) in a large family gathering at 'Aventure du Sucre. The celebrations will highlight alumni of the University who have now become important personalities in the country, including the Speaker of the National Assembly, Maya Hanoomanjee, former President of Mauritius Cassam Uteem and the textile entrepreneur François Woo. 

At their level, the faculties also organize activities to highlight their particular research. Thus, the Agriculture Faculty will opt for a demonstration of laboratory activities, an exhibition of products of the university farm, research students, an exhibition and sale of products by students including international students. That of Law and Management will organize a Stakeholders Meeting and environmental clean-up campaign by students. The Faculty of Oceanic Studies will address a workshop on "Capacity Building in the Ocean Economy" with guest of honor Geoffrey Boulton Professor; that of Social and Human Sciences will offer a photo exhibition on history. The Centre for Innovative Lifelong Learning will host a workshop on the concept of Smart-Mauritius Island and Hour of Code Community Outreach activity.
Sports activities are also on the program: football tournaments, beach volleyball, badminton and table tennis.

La cérémonie d’installation du nouveau chancelier de l’Université de Maurice (UoM) a eu lieu hier en présence de la vice-présidente de la République, Monique Ohsan-Bellepeau — le Président Kailash Purryag étant en visite en Inde —, du Premier ministre sir Anerood Jugnauth et de la ministre de l’Éducation, Leela Devi Dookun. Jean-Claude Autrey a soutenu qu’une attention spéciale devait être accordée à la relation entre les qualifications et l’emploi. « The main issue is not matching people to jobs, but to empower them to integrate future jobs by developing their employability », a-t-il déclaré. Il est revenu à la vice-chancelière, le Professeur Romeela Mohee, de présenter Jean-Claude Autrey, qu’elle a qualifié de « right man in the right place ».

Jean-Claude Autrey a une très longue carrière dans le domaine de la recherche sur le plan local et international, dont 48 ans au Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute (MSIRI). Son installation au poste de chancelier intervient une année après la célébration du centenaire de l’École d’Agriculture, à la base de la création de l’UoM, qui célébrera ses 50 ans cette année.

UoM Employability Forum 2014 - June 2014

LAUNCHING of the HAAGRIM PROJECT - INTRA ACP MOBILITY - SENEGAL

Mobilité universitaire Intra-ACP : Une vingtaine de dossiers ont été sélectionnés pour constituer la première cohorte du projet HAAGRIM  l’agrobusiness africain.

 Le programme Harmonisation et Amélioration des Programmes de Master et de Doctorat en Agrobusiness par la Mobilité entre l’Afrique de l’Ouest, de l’Est et du Centre pour un Développement socio-économique durable ( Haagrim) est né pour servir de plateforme de formation et de recherche en agrobusiness et de catalyseur pour la croissance durable et inclusive de l’Afrique », a déclaré, ce matin, le recteur de l’Université Gaston Berger de Saint-Louis, le professeur Lamine Guèye qui présidait la cérémonie de lancement de ce projet.

The Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Mauritius is a partner in this Intra-ACP mobility programme. Mr Kamleshwar Boodhoo of the Faculty of Agriculture attended the launching ceremony. Dr Brinda Ramasawmy, who is the local coordinator of the project, has put in place the project locally. Mauritian students and staff registered at the UoM stands to gain from this mobility programme and give them a different perspective of agribusines in the partner countries of the project.  Mobilité universitaire Intra-ACP : le projet Haagrim veut booster l’agrobusiness africain. « HAAGRIM peut jouer un rôle clé dans le renforcement des compétences en  grobusiness au niveau des institutions partenaires, mais aussi peut jouer un rôle moteur dans la stratégie de développement agricole en Afrique », a-t-il ajouté en exprimant l’honneur fait à l’UGB « d’assurer la coordination de ce programme collaboratif qui assure une mobilité des étudiants et du personnel académique et technique en agrobusiness ».

Le recteur GUEYE a signalé par ailleurs que « la priorité accordée à l’agriculture, nécessite, de la part de tout un chacun, un engagement et des ruptures en matière de pratiques et de comportements », en indiquant que la création à l’UGB de l’UFR S2ATA répond à cette préoccupation.

En effet, l’UFR dispense une formation de pointe en Agronomie, en Nutrition, en agroalimentaire. À l’issue de leur formation, les diplômés seront qualifiés pour appliquer les connaissances acquises, les outils modernes de la technologie d’ingénierie agricole et pour résoudre les problèmes complexes de l’agrobusiness. Financé par l’Union européenne dans le cadre du Programme de mobilité universitaire intra-ACP (Afrique, Caraïbes et Pacifique) et pour un montant de 1.927.925,00 €. Une vingtaine de dossiers ont été sélectionnés pour constituer la première cohorte du projet «Harmonisation et amélioration des programmes de master et de doctorat en agro-business par la mobilité entre l’Afrique de l’Ouest, de l’Est et du Centre pour un développement socio-économique durable (HAAGRIM), a affirmé, vendredi à Saint-Louis, son coordonnateur Seydou Nourou Sall.

Le docteur Saidou SALL, coordonnateur de l’Haagrim a expliqué que ce programme va concourir à renforcer la coopération entre les différents établissements membres. Il va faciliter l’accès à une éducation de qualité, a dit le docteur SALL, en permettant aux étudiants d’entreprendre des études et troisièmes cycle. « Le programme Haagrim va assurer plus de mobilité personnel administratif et renforcer la compétitivité des universités membres, une disposition bien exprimée dans les recommanda issus de la concertation nationale sur l'enseignement supérieur », note M. SALL.

L’Union européenne qui soutient ce programme souhaite le renforcement de la mobilité universitaire et espère que le nombre d’étudiants qui bénéficie de ce projet soit revu à la hausse, d’après Elena Palavbova, la représentante de l’organisation.

À la suite de la cérémonie officielle, marquée par une présence des toutes les parties prenantes, le Docteur Ndiobo DIENE, Coordonnateur du Programme de Développement inclusif de l'Agrobusiness au Sénégal a présenté une communication sur le thème : « Agrobusiness et développement en Afrique ».

Rappelons que le projet Haagrim a été mis en place, à l’issue du Séminaire du Réseau Africain pour l’Agriculture, l’Agroforesterie et de la Gestion des Ressources naturelles (ANAFE),tenu à l’UGB en avril 2012. Les universités partenaires de l’UGB dans ce projet sont : Université polytechnique de Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso), Université de Thiès (Sénégal), Université des sciences et techniques de Masuku (Gabon), Université Abomey-Calavi (Bénin), Kenyaatta University (Kenya), Université of Mauritius (Ile Maurice) Université Félixe Houphouët Boigny (Côte-d’Ivoire).

Agricultural Society Activities _ Clean Up Campaign

CLEAN UP CAMPAIGN AT ILE AUX BENITIER:

The Agricultural Society under the leadership of Ms Zainal Kureeman, participated in a Clean Up Campaign on the 30th of September 2012 which was organised by Mission Verte - Ile Maurice on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th. 13 students from the Faculty participated and contributed to the success of this event.

The theme of this event was ''Ramass plastik fer li vinn artistic l'ile vin manifik.'' effect. (Pick up plastic, make it into something artistic and help keep our island beautiful)
  
The project aims at raising the awareness of stakeholders involved in environmental management. 

It was shocking to see the amount of waste on the islet, as shown in the pictures.
