Title: Global Food Supply Chains in Focus: Distinguished Expert to Discuss Recent Disruptions and Changes

Join us for an illuminating seminar on the transformation of global fresh produce supply chains by Professor Elmar Kulke, a distinguished expert in Economic Geography from Humboldt University, Berlin. The seminar, hosted by the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Mauritius, will take place on Tuesday, January 21st, 2025, from 12:00 to 13:00 at Lt 2, NAC.

In an era where Mauritian supermarkets stock cherries from Italy and German stores display Kenyan flowers, understanding global food supply chains has never been more crucial. Professor Kulke will explore how the landscape of agricultural distribution has dramatically evolved over the past two decades, shifting from traditionally traded durable goods like coffee and tea to include highly perishable produce.

The seminar comes at a particularly relevant time, as recent global events including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine war have significantly impacted these intricate supply networks. Professor Kulke will analyze how these disruptions have affected specialized agricultural clusters and their connections to global markets.

Professor Kulke brings impressive credentials to this discussion. As the former President of the German Association of Geographers and past Vice-President of Humboldt University, his expertise spans international service networks and agricultural value chains. His current research focuses on the evolution of fresh fruit, vegetable, and cut flower supply chains at regional, national, and international levels. He also serves as an editor for prestigious journals and coordinates the ERASMUS+ Project connecting Germany with several African nations.

This session promises to offer valuable insights for agriculture students, professionals in the food industry, and anyone interested in understanding how their food travels from farm to table in our increasingly interconnected world.
