AGRO-INDUSTRIE : RELANCE DU SECTEUR THE
Le gouvernement a décidé d’aider les
planteurs de thé à relancer leur secteur en leur offrant certaines
facilités, à commencer par des fertilisants et des sécateurs. Une
cérémonie symbolique a été organisée hier après-midi à Nouvelle-France,
au cours de laquelle le ministre de l’Agro-industrie, Mahen Seeruttun, a
dit sa confiance dans cette communauté agricole « qui a le potentiel de
continuer à produire du thé à Maurice ».
C’est lors d’une rencontre entre le ministre et certains planteurs de thé dans le sud du pays, il y a de cela plusieurs mois, que ces derniers avaient exprimé leurs doléances, leurs craintes et leurs difficultés à Mahen Seeruttun. Ils lui avaient fait un certain nombre de requêtes que le ministre a pris en considération.
M. Seeruttun affirme que les planteurs de thé ont travaillé très dur ces dernières décennies pour nourrir leurs familles et financer l’éducation de leurs enfants. « Mais, aujourd’hui, très peu de jeunes s’intéressent à ce secteur et pourtant, il connaît un développement extraordinaire au niveau mondial. Le thé est consommé dans tous les pays du monde et le secteur connaît une croissance de 7 % annuellement au niveau mondial », a-t-il indiqué. Il rappelle que Maurice produisait environ 8 000 tonnes de thé annuellement dans les années 80 mais la situation a changé au fil des ans et la production a chuté aujourd’hui à environ 1 500 tonnes seulement. Maurice exporte pour une valeur de Rs 15 M annuellement seulement.
Citant une étude de son ministère au sujet de ce secteur, Mahen Seeruttun a soutenu que le thé a un bon potentiel et que les conditions et le climat à Maurice sont propices à la relance du secteur. D’où l’intérêt que portent des investisseurs étrangers au thé mauricien. D’ailleurs, un investisseur chinois a déjà investi plus de Rs 200 M dans ce secteur.
Toujours selon le ministre, une superficie de plus de 500 arpents de terre sous culture de thé est abandonnée « mais nous pouvons la remettre sous culture ». D’où le lancement du Tea Sector Support Scheme par le gouvernement sous lequel ce dernier offre des fertilisants gratuitement, en sus de créer une pépinière et travailler avec la Chine pour la recherche de nouvelles variétés de thé.
Le ministère a passé commande de 1 400 sécateurs d’Afrique du Sud qu’il compte distribuer gratuitement aux planteurs pour remédier au problème de manque de main-d’œuvre.
Un budget de Rs 5 M est prévu sous ce scheme.

Strategic Plan 2016-2020 for the Food Crop, Livestock and Forestry sectors
The Strategic Plan 2016-2020 for the Food Crop, Livestock and Forestry sectors, which sets the objectives to improve the level of food
security and food safety and promote a more sustainable agriculture in
Mauritius has been made public by the Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security.
The Plan has been formulated to take Mauritius to a
higher level of food security whilst respecting the need for safe food and
better nutrition of the population. It caters for the need for sustainable
agricultural development in a climate-friendly mode as well as safeguarding
farmers’ livelihoods.
Its a roadmap for reviving the agricultural sector wherein emphasis is on
the preservation of our biodiversity, to ensure the
future of the sector with focus on innovation and research as well as increase
production in an integrated manner alongside other development projects such as
the creation of Smart Cities.
The Plan covers three main
components: economic, environmental, and social. On the economic aspect
priority will be on the gradual reduction of our dependence on the importation
of agricultural and basic food products. This will create employment and offer
additional opportunities for planters to produce more and increase their
revenue.

Wooton with a central market to the tune of Rs 350 million.

Food Security Plan
